Questions Before You Visit or Write

Practical answers about the current hang, the catalogue record and the ways to look at the work in person. If something below does not cover your case, the gallery reads every message sent through the contact page.

What does a catalogue entry actually contain?

Four parts: the maker, the medium, the year and a short note on where the work was made. Read across a season, those parts let you follow one artist through several plates or compare how a painting and a linocut answer the same stretch of farmland.

How closely does the online gallery match the rooms?

It mirrors the physical hang room by room, in the same order. A note you take in front of a wall can be checked against the same wall at home, which is the main reason the sequence is kept rather than sorted by theme.

What is the zoom view for?

Close reading. It shows paper grain in a print and brush marks in a painting, details a small serif caption cannot carry on its own. Use it when you want to judge how a block was cut or how wet the surface of a canvas still looks.

How do I get the seasonal catalogue?

Request it by email and it is sent to you. Four shows run each year, and each catalogue lists the works, the mediums and the places they came from, so a season stays readable after the hang comes down.

Are print editions available, and which ones?

Selected editions are offered as print-on-demand. The catalogue states plainly which works are available that way and which are held only in the physical hang, so there is no guessing when you read a listing.

Walk-through or studio visit, which fits me?

The Saturday walk-through moves through the rooms with the gallery team and suits a first look. A studio visit is arranged separately with a resident artist and suits a closer interest in how the work is made. Both are requested in advance.

Still unsure where to start? The contact page carries the address, phone and email for catalogue requests and visit arrangements. How enquiries are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

What to include in a message

  • The maker, medium and year of the work you are asking about, if you have them to hand.
  • Which room of the online gallery you were reading, so the same wall can be checked.
  • Whether you want the seasonal catalogue sent by email or a studio visit arranged.
  • Any access needs or group size, so the gallery can plan the visit properly.

Where to go next

The catalogue, the zoom view and the walk-through each answer a different kind of question. If you are not sure which one you need, the routes below are the plainest way through.

Reading a catalogue entry

Each entry carries four parts: the maker, the medium, the year and a short note on where the work was made. Read across a season and you can trace one artist through several plates, or compare how a painting and a linocut answer the same stretch of farmland.

Using the online mirror

The online gallery follows the physical hang room by room, so a note taken in front of a wall can be checked against the same wall at home. The zoom view is the close-reading tool here: it shows paper grain in a print and brush marks in a painting, which a small caption alone cannot carry.

Asking a person

For anything the catalogue does not settle, write to the gallery directly. The seasonal catalogue can be requested by email, and the Saturday walk-through is the in-person way to look with the room in front of you.
