If you want to talk about a work, ask for the seasonal catalogue, or arrange a Saturday walk-through, the gallery answers by email and phone. Nothing here is automated, so a person reads what you send.

Before you write

Most questions about how a work was made, what medium it uses, and where it was photographed are already answered in the catalogue entries. If you are still unsure after reading an entry, say which work you mean and we can point you to the right room.

For background on the gallery's method and the seasonal shows, start with the resources. If you would rather send a message directly, use the contact page.

Before you come, or before you write

A few practical points come up often when people plan a first look at the hang, ask for the catalogue, or try to make sense of how a work is recorded. Here is what usually needs clearing up.

What does a catalogue entry actually tell me?
Each entry names the maker, the medium, the year and a short note on where the work was made. That is the whole record, and it is the same whether you read it in the printed catalogue or on the online page.
Do I need to prepare anything for a walk-through?
No. The Saturday walk-through moves through the rooms in the same order as the online gallery, and the group stays small so there is time to stand in front of individual plates. Comfortable shoes are the only real requirement.
How long does a show stay up?
The gallery runs four seasonal shows a year, so each hang stays in place for roughly one season before the next one is installed. If a particular work matters to you, it is worth checking which show is currently hanging.
Can I see paper grain and brush marks online?
Yes. The zoom view on each image is there for exactly that, and it works the same way for a linocut, a painting or a large-format photograph. It is a close look at the surface, not a substitute for standing in front of the plate.
Which works are available as print editions?
Only selected editions are offered as print-on-demand, and the catalogue states plainly which works those are. Everything else is held in the physical hang alone.
How do I get the seasonal catalogue?
It is sent by email on request. If you would rather read more about the gallery's method first, the notes on looking at maker, medium, year and place sit alongside the rest of the resources. For anything the catalogue does not answer, the contact page is the place to write.

Reaching the gallery

Questions about a hanging, a catalogue entry or a work you saw online are best sent straight to the gallery. Use whichever channel suits you: post, phone or email. There is no form on this page.

If you are unsure which channel to use, email is the simplest. Write a line about what you are looking for and the gallery will point you to the right room, catalogue entry or page on this site.

What to send, and where it goes

If you want to follow a body of work beyond the current hang, a short note is enough. Tell us which room or which maker you are looking at, and what you would like to know about it. Questions about a specific plate, a caption that needs clarifying, or a work you saw in the catalogue and want to trace across seasons are all fair reasons to write.

Useful things to include

  • The maker, medium and year shown on the caption, if you have them to hand.
  • The room or season you were looking at, so we can find the same entry in the catalogue.
  • Whether your question is about a work in the physical hang or one listed in the online archive.
  • Anything you noticed in the zoom view that you would like explained.

Where to send it

Email is the simplest route for catalogue and archive questions. Phone works if you would rather talk something through.
